Damper (1) which is, in particular, stiff during the inward stroke thereof and can be used, for example, as a railway damper. The piston (8) which divides the cylinder (3) into two chambers (40,42) is provided with non-return valves (22,30) which operate in both directions and are configured as characteristic. A sleeve (13) extends from the bottom (35) of the cylinder (3) which is displaceable in the interior of the piston/piston rod and one end of which is connected to a reservoir (2) and the other end of which may be connected to one of said chambers. In addition, a bottom valve (7) is present in the cylinder (3). The combination of sleeve/bottom valve is fitted in such a manner that when the piston (8) moves inwards in the cylinder (3), the liquid volume which has to be displaced is moved by additional rod volume which enters the cylinder (3) via the sleeve (13) in the reservoir (12). During the outward movement, the liquid is replenished from the reservoir (12) via the bottom valve (17).
