1-Chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane is prepared by heating trichloroethylene with hydrogen fluoride at superatmospheric pressure, either in the absence of chlorine or in the presence of not more than one mole of chlorine per mole of trichloroethylene (this proportion being averaged over the total reaction period) and in the presence of at least one mole of an antimony fluorochloride catalyst, a proportion of the antimony being in the pentavalent state, this proportion not exceeding 60% for at least the major part of the reaction period. Preferably 3-10 moles of hydrogen fluoride are employed per mole of trichloroethylene. The preferred reaction temperature is 60 DEG C.-130 DEG C. The fluorine content of the catalyst may be 8%-16%. Specifications 391,168, 767,779 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,005,708, 2,005,710 and 2,637,747 are referred to. |
