The method involves conveying fuel from a metering unit and a high pressure pump into a fuel storage. Pressure in the fuel storage is detected, and the detected pressure is controlled by controlling the metering unit. Characteristic curves (K1, K2) determined during manufacturing of the metering unit and/or the pump are considered for controlling the metering unit, where the characteristic curves represent real characteristics of the metering unit and/or the pump. The characteristic curves are provided in the form of a coding and/or lettering on the metering unit and/or the pump. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for controlling an internal combustion engine.
