<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate an operation to designate a character string across a line. <P>SOLUTION: An electronic dictionary 1 includes a display part 40 whose display screen is formed integrally with a touch panel 110; a flash ROM 80 for storing a dictionary DB820 configured by associating explanation information including a text with each keyword; an input part 30 for designating the range of a character string in the text displayed at the display part 40 based on a touch operation from a user to the touch panel 110; and a CPU 20 for determining whether a final designation position by the input part 30 is present in the end of the line of the display screen, and for, when it is determined that the final designation position is present in the end of the line, retrieving the keyword whose forward matching with the character string is successful, the character string including a range designation character string by the input part 30 and a series of character strings from a leading character in the next line of the range designation character string in this order, from the dictionary DB820.
