PURPOSE: An image forming apparatus and control method thereof are provide to obtain an image of high quality and to determine the kind of paper in case an automatic mode is set up. CONSTITUTION: A controller(301) communicates with a host computer(300), an engine control unit(303), and an operation panel unit(302). A serial command transmitting signal line is transmitted from the controller to the engine control unit. The serial command transmitting signal line transmits state data from the engine control unit to the controller. The serial command transmitting signal line transmits a synchronizing signal tot eh controller.
