PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily decide validity of a retrieval result of retrieval to an electronic document. SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus extracts an object area from an input document image, and extracts metadata associated to the extracted object area from a character string included in the document image. The image processing apparatus generates, as retrieval supplement information for performing display for the retrieval, information (position information or the character string itself) related to the character string extracted as the metadata, and performs output as the electronic document storing data of the document image, the metadata associated to the object area, and the retrieval supplement information. The output electronic document is described such that the object area associated to the metadata according with a keyword and the retrieval supplement information related to the metadata according with the keyword are displayed such that they are identified when the output electronic document is retrieved by the keyword.
