The electrode has an interface layer (3) formed between a core component (1) and a sheath component (4). The interface layer, the core component and the sheath component are made of respective different carbonaceous materials. A coefficient of thermal expansion of the core component is lesser than that of the interface layer and the sheath component. A coefficient of thermal expansion of the interface layer is lesser than that of the sheath component. The sheath component and the interface layer form a hollow cylinder. A ratio of a core radius to an electrode radius lies between 0.3 and 0.9. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing an electrode.
