PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermally-assisted magnetic recording head comprising a near-field-light-generating optical system with an improved light use efficiency. SOLUTION: The head comprises: a magnetic pole to generate a write-in magnetic field; the waveguide propagating a light for exciting surface plasmon; and a near-field-light-generating element for generating the near-field-light from its end surface located adjacent to the magnetic pole end surface facing a medium. The waveguide cross-section taken by a plane perpendicular to a waveguide edge along an elongated direction, has substantially a trapezoidal shape in which a longer side of opposed parallel sides is an edge of the cross-section on the near-field-light-generating element side. This configuration enables a coupled portion of the near-field-light-generating element which is coupled to the light to be placed in the effective distribution range of the light seeping out from the waveguide. Consequently, a sufficiently strong coupling between the light seeping out from the waveguide and the near-field-light-generating element in a surface plasmon mode, is provided.
