PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar heater that achieves an optimum temperature control without causing users to be conscious of the control and irrespective of heater usage of a seating position either sitting directly on the heater or sitting on a chair. SOLUTION: The planar heater includes: a pyroelectric sensor 2 used as a human body detecting sensor that outputs a signal according to either mode of a directly sitting mode that an user uses the heater with directly sitting on a planar heater body 1 or a sitting on a chair mode that with sitting on a chair; and a planar heater usage mode switcher 101 that switches the temperature range of low to high of a temperature setter 10 in accordance with the human body detecting signal from the pyroelectric sensor 2 so as to switch it to a low range at the directly sitting mode and to a high range at the sitting on a chair mode, whereby the planar heater sets temperature by itself without causing users to be conscious of controlling it, and provides good usability.
