<p>The method for joining two metallic components by friction stir welding process, comprises guiding a rotating tool head along a joining zone (20) between the components under a given contact pressure, plasticizing and connecting the materials of the components in the joining zone, and initially pressing a first rotationally-symmetric tool region (22) onto the joining zone until it penetrates into the joining zone, so that a second rotationally-symmetric tool region (24) reaches into a system with the joining zone and is guided to the tool head along the joining zone. The method for joining two metallic components by friction stir welding process, comprises guiding a rotating tool head along a joining zone (20) between the components under a given contact pressure, plasticizing and connecting the materials of the components in the joining zone, and initially pressing a first rotationally-symmetric tool region (22) onto the joining zone until it penetrates into the joining zone, so that a second rotationally-symmetric tool region (24) reaches into a system with the joining zone and is guided to the tool head along the joining zone. The tool head is set in an inlet area formed in one of the workpieces for beginning the joining process, where the inlet area is machineably removed after the joining process. During guiding the tool head along the joining zone, a recess (18) is produced through the second tool region. During the joining, a temperature of a partial area of the tool head is determined and the tool head is cooled during exceed of a given temperature. During joining, a welding seam quality is tested by a measuring device integrated in the tool head.
