An organic electroluminescent element comprising: a pair of electrodes composed of an anode and a cathode arranged on a substrate; a light-emitting layer intercalated between the electrodes; and an organic layer adjacent to the light-emitting layer and intercalated between the light-emitting layer and the cathode. In the organic electroluminescent element, at least one compound containing a carbazole structure is contained in the light-emitting layer, and at least one hydrocarbon compound composed only of carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms, having a molecular weight of 400 to 1200, and having a C13-22 fused polycyclic scaffold is contained in the organic layer adjacent to the light-emitting layer.
