The present invention relates to a method for producing alcohols and/or solvents from cellulosic or lignocellulosic biomass including at least the following steps: a) alkaline chemical pretreating of a cellulosic or lignocellulosic substrate; b) optional washing of the pretreated substrate; c) enzymatic hydrolyzing of the pretreated and optionally washed substrate using celluloytic and/or hemicellulolytic enzymes producing a hydrolysate and a water-insoluble residue; d) microbial fermenting of the hydrolysate derived from step c) and obtaining a fermenting must containing at least one alcohol and/or solvent; e) separating/purifying the alcohol and/or solvent and f) separating a cake containing the insoluble residue, in which at least a portion of the cake obtained in step f) is sent into at least one cellulose regeneration reactor, prior to being recycled downstream from the alkaline chemical pretreatment step a).
