PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus configured such that when control for a fixing section is unnecessary, a control section for controlling the fixing section is shifted to a quiescent state as early as possible, thereby reducing power consumption, compared to a conventional image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes a first control section 41 and a second control section 61. The first control section controls the heater 451 of a fixing device in an active state by switching between the active state and the quiescent state, in which power consumption is less than that in the active state. When the first control section is in the quiescent state, the second control section 61 exerts control for a cooling section 82 based on the result of detecting a space where the fixing section 45 is disposed, and other control such as communication. Further, in part or the entire period in which the first control section is in the quiescent state, the image forming apparatus 1 switches from a state in which the first control section controls the cooling section to a state in which the second control section controls the cooling section.
