Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for processing multimedia contents. The invention comprises: one or more databases which store type identification information for identifying types of one or more multimedia contents; a media type identification engine which sets a reference database according to externally inputted database identification information or path information, and identifies types of multimedia contents received through an application by referring to type identification information stored in the reference database; and a media framework engine which provides one or more application programming interfaces (APIs) for processing the multimedia contents, and calls a designated API according to the identified types of the multimedia contents.
