A method of making a selenium photoconductive or photovoltaic cell comprises dipping or wetting a layer of selenium on a carrier-plate in pyridine, alcoholic hydroquinone or aniline for a period of 15 minutes to 24 hours and rinsing off any liquid remaining. The treatment may be used to initiate and promote crystallization or to improve the crystallization after the normal annealing treatment. In one embodiment a seleniumcoated carrier-plate is immersed in or moistened with pyridine for 30 minutes to 24 hours, rinsed in alcohol or water and dried in air. Alternatively it is treated for 15 minutes to 12 hours in a solution of 0.01-0.2% by volume of hydroquinone in alcohol and rinsed in alcohol, or treated for 15 minutes to 6 hours in a solution of aniline, rinsed in the pure solvent and dried. In all cases a barrier layer is then provided by vacuum evaporation of cadmium and a lightpermeable electrode of, e.g., Au applied over the barrier layer.
