The locking device (20) has a latch (26) movable by a manually actuated lever (28), handle or knob. The latch interacts with a receiving element arranged at a frame or housing. The latch has multiple engaging elements (30) for interacting with the housing or frame fixed receiving element. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a safety unit for a work area of a machine to be protected against penetration of an object or against an intervention; and (2) a machine for processing or handling of objects such as beverage containers or bottles.
