897,057. Centrifugal separators. BIRD MACHINE CO. March 14, 1961 [March 14, 1960], No. 9254/61. Class 23. In a cyclone for purifying paper pulp and comprising a vortex chamber 10 having a restricted outlet 14 for rejected particles at one end and a whirl producing inlet 16 and a second centrally disposed outlet 18 or vortex finder for the purified pulp dispersion at the other end, the outlet 18 has a central core 24 to obstruct passage of the hollow vortex 28 and thus prevent gas bubbles in the vortex from becoming re-entrained in the purified pulp flowing through the outlet 18, any excess gas being vented through the outlet 14. The core 24 is connected to the outlet by a spider 22 and preferably has a diameter 10% to 20% greater than that of the vortex 28. The inlet 16 for the pulp to be treated is tangential to the chamber 10. In a modification, Fig. 3, the outlet 36 converges towards its open end 38 and a tapered member 48 having an obstructing face 50 extending beyond the open end 38 is screwed to a core 46 connected by a spider 44 to the outlet 36. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the outlet is flared at its open end and the obstructing face of the core is located within the outlet and spaced from the open end.
|
