878,162. Friction clutches. WEAVER, W. A. April 22, 1959, No. 13655/59. Class 80(2). A clutch comprises a double cone 33 carried by, but movable axially relative to, an input shaft 16 by pressure fluid supplied to one of a pair of working chambers 29a separated by a central annular piston 34, for the alternative engagement of either of two clutch elements 39, 45 on members 36, 43 integral with coaxial output shafts 17, 18. A pinion 22 on the input shaft 16 drives a gear-wheel pump, the output from which is controlled manually by a valve, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), to supply the fluid through ducts 58, 59 to either of a pair of passages 52, 53 in the shaft. The cone member 33 is held in its central, neutral position by opposed springs 48. The clutch may be employed with the reversing gearing described in Specification 855,443. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), members 36, 43 are arranged on opposite sides of the cone member 33, and one of the output shafts surrounds the input shaft. |
