<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery that can prevent degradation of battery characteristics such as cycle characteristics, and to provide a separator. <P>SOLUTION: The separator 23 includes: a base material layer 23a; and a surface layer 23b that is formed on at least one of both major surfaces of the base material layer 23a. The surface layer 23b contains inorganic particles and polyvinylidene fluoride.
