PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus, a program updating method and a recording medium which can cope with program updating operation quickly, accurately and easily. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: hardware resources including a printer part or a scanner part; an operating system; a program for performing the management, execution control and an image forming process of the hardware resources used in common from an application; an application for performing image processing utilizing the hardware resources; and a storage section which stores the application and the program. The image forming apparatus also includes: a network control means being one of programs which controls network communication and receives, via a network, updating data of the application or the program; and an updating means which updates the application or the program stored in the storage section by use of the updating data received by the network control means.
