<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for forming a borderless image without staining the rear of a transfer material by preventing contact between the tip of the transfer material and a loop detection member when a borderless image is printed by a conventional image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier 2 for carrying a toner image; a transfer means 5 for transferring the toner image from the image carrier 2 onto a transfer material P; a fixing device 14 for fixing toner on the transfer material P; and a loop detection member 22 that is located between the transfer means 5 and the fixing means 14, and comes in contact with the transfer material P to detect the loop state of the transfer material P. In this case, the image forming apparatus includes a first mode for transferring the toner image up to the edge of the transfer material P.
