A selection unit (104) selects a dialogue mode, in accordance with a combination of the detected "moving mode", "holding status", and "speech posture status", from a plurality of dialogue modes which define dialogue processes. A dialogue control unit (105) controls a dialogue process with the user in accordance with the selected dialogue mode. A retrieval unit (106) retrieves information using a keyword extracted from the dialogue process with the user. Thereby, an optimal dialogue process corresponding to a usage status of the information retrieval device (1) by the user is executed, and information that the user desires can be effectively retrieved.
