PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium for protein-free and serum-free culture of cells, particularly mammalian cells.

SOLUTION: The medium for protein-free and serum-free culture contains soybean hydrolysate, at least 40% of which has a molecular weight of 500 dalton or less, obtained by ultrafiltration and size exclusion chromatography. The medium is used for culture of mammalian cells in a method for protein production from cell culture.
