PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To vitrify asbestos at a low cost without producing dust in order to solve such problems that much treatment expenses are required for detoxification of asbestos and the dust is generated to cause an environmental problem. SOLUTION: The method of detoxifying asbestos includes: a process of impregnating asbestos waste with an alkali silicate solution; a process of pelletizing the asbestos waste impregnated with the alkali silicate; a process of curing the pellet of the asbestos waste; and a process of mixing the cured pellet and a thermite agent and performing thermal fusion and vitrification of the mixture. The ratio of mixing the cured pellet and the thermite agent is, by weight, 100/(5 to 30). Upon the manufacture of the pellet, a foaming agent is added and foamed, and the asbestos waste impregnated with the alkali silicate is wrapped with bubbles and are pelletized.
