PURPOSE: A battery capacity estimator and a method thereof are provided to accurately estimate a usable capacity of a battery by setting a safety margin in a charging state for using the battery safely in view of a battery degeneration and an IR drop phenomenon. CONSTITUTION: A SOC estimating unit(202) predicts the state of charge of a battery. An actual capacity estimating unit(204) quantifies a battery degeneration due to a resistance degeneration rate and predicts an actual capacity of battery based on the initial quantity of battery. A SOC safety margin estimating unit(205) predicts a safety margin in the charged state where the battery can be safely used, on the basis of a resistance degeneration rate. A usable capacity estimating unit(206) predicts a usable capacity of battery by using a predicted charged state, the actual capacity and the safety margin. A memory unit(104) stores the predicted usable capacity. |
