PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a knitting yarn gripping device of a flatbed knitting machines and a method of control for the flatbed knitting machine, with its inside gripping device capable of standing-by while gripping a knitting yarn, while, even if its outside gripping device is lifted, no breakage of yarn or no yarn cast-off can be generated. SOLUTION: A controller 31 sets, at least with respect to the inner gripping mechanism 11a, a stand-by position at a location above the lowest limit of the rise and fall stroke of the inner gripping mechanism 11a, the stand-by being carried out with a gripping portion 12a closed for gripping the end of a knitting yarn 6a. The gripping mechanism 11a, when re-rising, as is inverted, after it has descended further down than the stand-by position, opens the gripping portion 12a, while if it rises directly from the stand-by position, it keeps the gripping portion 12a closed. It follows then that when the outside gripping mechanism 11b is raised so as for the knitting yarn 6b to be caught by the gripping portion 11b, the gripping mechanism 11a is also made to keep gripping the knitting yarn 6a with the gripping portion 12a while raising the yarn without pulling, thus preventing the occurrence of yarn breakage or yarn cast-off.
