PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cold-cathode discharge lamp and a backlight device with high luminous efficiency and long life. SOLUTION: The cold-cathode discharge lamp includes a glass bulb 11 with its inner diameter to be 5.0 mm or less, a discharge medium sealed inside the glass bulb 11, and a pair of electrodes 32 fitted inside the glass bulb, wherein the lamp is driven with electric current of 10 mA or more. The discharge medium is structured of mixed gas with argon and krypton, and then a partial pressure ratio of krypton is 10% or more and 90% or less. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
