A moving picture coding method comprises a step of generating a plurality of motion compensated picture signals according to a signal to be coded representing a picture to be coded and a plurality of reference pictures, a step of generating a predicted signal representing the predicted value of the signal to be coded using the plurality of motion compensated picture signals, a step of generating a predicted error signal representing the difference between the signal to be coded and the predicted signal, a step of selecting an entropy code allocation rule in which the amount of the information when the predicted error signal has been coded is expected to be the minimum according to the plurality of motion compensated picture signals from among a plurality of the entropy code allocation rules for coding the predicted error signal, and a step of generating coding information from the predicted error signal according to the selected entropy code allocation rule.
