PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing an organic solvent-dispersed sol including metal oxide fine particles having a high refractive index and low photocatalytic activity, such an organic solvent-dispersed sol, and a coating composition obtained using the organic solvent-dispersed sol. SOLUTION: The method for preparing an organic solvent-dispersed sol including metal oxide fine particles includes drying and firing an aggregate of surface-coated titanium-based fine particles obtained by coating surfaces of titanium-based fine particles comprising a compound oxide containing titanium and tin and/or silicon with a silica-based oxide or a silica-based compound oxide, and pulverizing the resulting sintered body of the aggregate in the presence of an organic solvent. Such an organic solvent-dispersed sol and the coating composition obtained using the organic solvent-dispersed sol are also provided.
