<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of reducing an impact caused by an opening and closing operation and reducing the operation load of the opening and closing operation by making the operation load of an opening and closing member variable according to the level of the opening and closing operation force of the opening and closing member by a user, with a simple and inexpensive configuration. <P>SOLUTION: A printer whose top cover can be manually opened and closed with respect to an apparatus body by the user includes a brake unit 70 including: a power conversion unit 71 which rotates a brake gear 80 by a rack part 81, according to the opening and closing operation of the top cover, to move the brake gear to one side or the other side of an axial direction; and a friction load member 72 which comes into frictional contact with the brake gear 80, according to the movement of the brake gear 80 to one side of the axial direction.
