The method involves computing mass flow that flows over low pressure exhaust gas recirculation (SW-NDAGR) and computing a reference value (SW-A-HDAGR,SW-A-NDAGR) for the pressure upstream a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation valve (SW-P-NDAGR) in dependence of the computed mass flux. An adjustment of cross-section of the opening of an exhaust gas flap (SW-P-AKL) is carried out in dependence of the computed reference value and measured actual value for the pressure upstream the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation valve.
