A carbon molecular sieve composition for storing hydrogen and a method for forming a carbon molecular sieve material is provided. In addition, a method of storing hydrogen using the carbon molecular sieve composition and a method for separating gases such as hydrogen or helium from mixtures of other gases is provided.
