PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new technology capable of improving the accuracy of determining whether a subject exists within a macro domain or not, and shortening a time required for the determination. SOLUTION: The imaging device includes: an imaging means to photoelectrically convert an image of an subject formed by an imaging optical system to generate an image signal; a generation means to generate, an evaluation value representing the in-focus state of the imaging optical system from the image signal generated by the imaging means; an adjusting means to perform focus detection by adjusting a position of a focus adjusting lens so as to maximize the evaluation value generated by the generation means by using first drive for driving the focus adjusting lens included in the imaging optical system along an optical axis direction with a first drive amount, and second drive for driving the focus adjusting lens along the optical axis direction with a second drive amount which is larger than the first drive amount; and a determination means to determine whether or not the subject exists in a macro domain of the imaging optical system which is nearer than a distance determined beforehand during the focus detection by the adjusting means.
