PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device capable of stabilizing an arc bright spot of a discharge lamp, even in a dimming power lighting mode and a projector mounted with the device. SOLUTION: In the high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device, a power feed unit for the high-pressure discharge lamp comprises a rated power lighting mode and a dimming power lighting mode, and in the dimming power lighting mode, a rectangular wave alternating current having a first period (τ1) and a second period (τ2) is supplied. In the first period (τ1), a higher frequency current, of which the average current value (I1a) supplied to one electrode (20a) is higher than an average current value (Ilb) supplied to the other electrode (20b) is supplied; and in the second period, a current (I2) lower than the average current value (Ila) supplied to the one electrode to the other electrode (20b) is supplied for a period longer than the half period (τ0) of a high-frequency current. The projector is provided with the high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device, a controlling part for controlling working of the projector, a light modulation element, and a magnifying unit.
