PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a saw wire which has enhanced strength and rigidity in spite of being a thin line, and can extend the life of itself by suppressing fatigue fracture and improving corrosion resistance, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The saw wire is a particle-fixed type saw wire which has particulate abrasive grains for cutting fixed on the surface of a core material formed of a thin metal wire through a coating material. The core material is formed of an austenitic stainless steel wire which includes, by mass%, 0.05-0.15 C, Si≤2.0, Mn≤3.0, 6.0-9.5 Ni, 16.0-19.0 Cr, 0.005-0.25% N while 2C+N is adjusted to 0.17-0.40% and the balance Fe with unavoidable impurities; and has such characteristics that the tensile strength (σ) is 2,500-3,500 MPa and a ratioα=(E1/E0)×100 is 45% or more, which is the ratio of a strain amount (E1) in a proportional elastic region in a stress-strain diagram in a tensile test to the total strain amount (E0) applied by the time the material is broken.
