The device has an edge tape (6) advanced into a region of a pressure zone by a relative movement of a workpiece (1) and the edge tape to a narrow side of the workpiece. The edge tape is connected with the workpiece by a function layer (9) e.g. thermoplastic resin or glue layer, that acts on the workpiece before connecting the edge tape with the workpiece. A press member (10) e.g. pressure shoe and pressure roll, is laid out in the edge tape with pulsating pressure. An energy supply (4) i.e. laser, acts in the region of an adding zone (5) and the workpiece for activating the function layer. An independent claim is also included for a method for creating edges of a workpiece.
