890,449. Semi-conductor rectifiers. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Aug. 26, 1960 [Aug. 28, 1959], No. 29410/59. Class 37. A semi-conductor rectifier comprises a rectifying element 3, Fig. 2b, mounted on a base electrode 1, the outer surface of which is in the form of a truncated cone, a seal 8 for the rectifying element formed by a resinous sealing compound, and a cooling attachment 6 having an aperture 7 of frusto-conical form corresponding to the outer surface of the base electrode, the base electrode being fixed in the aperture by pressing or other suitable means. As shown, the rectifying element 3, which comprises a wafer of monocrystalline silicon, is mounted on electrode 1, which is made of copper, by way of a tungsten disc 2, and is surmounted by a molybdenum disc 4 to which is connected a second copper electrode 5. Cooling attachment 6 comprises a rectangular metal plate in which aperture 7 is stamped at an eccentric point along a diagonal. In a modification, Fig. 3, the cooling attachment 9 comprises a thick plate, having a central frusto-conical aperture within its thickness, which is screwed to a heatsink 11 which may be water- or air-cooled. A plurality of rectifiers may be mounted on a single heat sink. The direction of taper of the frusto-conical surfaces of base electrode and aperture may be the opposite of that shown, and the frusto-conical surface of the base electrode may extend over part only of one dimension. The cooling attachment may be cylindrical. The rectifying element may comprise germanium.
|
