PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for applying multi-point AF using contrast AF are provided to perform quick and accurate AF by not performing AF search if the AF peak of the subject of a center area and the subject of an adjacent area is detected. CONSTITUTION: A shutter release button is half-pushed, CPU(Central Processing Unit) detects the input of a half-push signal and controls a lens controller(110) to drive a focus lens(104) via communication pins. The CPU directly controls the drive of the focus lens when the input of the half-push signal is detected. The CPU acquires a video signal from an image pickup device(204). A pre-processor calculates an AF evaluation value. The lens controller moves the focus lens to a calculated location.
