[Also in Groups XI and XXV] An internally illuminated handrail comprises an elongated hollow casing formed with a window and removable means adjustably mounted in the casing for supporting a fluorescent tube and a starter and for reflecting rays from the tube through the window. In the form shown, the rail consists of a lower part 5 mounted by bolts on parapet posts (not shown) and having a rear wall 9, and an upper part 10 supported on the upper edge of the wall 9 and on a rail 16 which is caused by spaced struts 14 mounted at the front edge of the lower part. The front edge has a groove 6 in which is inserted the lower edge of a window 8, the upper edge of which is received in a groove on the underside of the rail 16. The parts 5, 10 are connected at each end by bolts 28, the lower ends of which pass through the part 5, and the upper ends are formed with pointed heads below which are diametrically opposed shouldered recesses 28a. The upper part 10 carries springs 27 having bent-over tongues 27a which engage below the shoulders 28a. The bolts have shaped lower ends 28b so that they can be turned through 90 degrees by a special spanner, thereby releasing the bolts from the springs 27. The part 5 supports an arcuate plate 37 to which a curved plate 39a is secured by bolts 40 in open-ended slots 39b. The plate 39a carries a curved reflector rail 39 to which a starter 47 and supports 46 for a fluorescent tube 43 are secured. Intermediate hanger 42 formed with a hook engaging the top of the rail and a leg abutting the reflector surface are provided to support the tube 43 intermediate its ends. The centre of curvature of the plate 39a coincides with the tube 43 so test adjustment of the position of the rail 39 will not affect the position of the tube inside the casing. The rail 39 and associated parts can be removed from the casing as a unit.</p> |
