An electrical component is at least partially immersed in a volatile coolant liquid in a sealed casing. Baffles or other means are arranged within the casing to reduce the tendency of the liquid level to change when the casing is displaced from its normal operating position or subjected to acceleration forces. In the embodiment four series-connected silicon diode rectifiers 1-4 mounted coaxially in a steel tube 16 with dished steel end plates 17 are cooled by a volatile halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. trifluorotriohloroethane. The tube is evacuated and then filled with sufficient coolant to cover the diodes when the tube axis is horizontal via tubule 29 which is then sealed off. Dangerous fluid pressures within the tube are prevented by a burstable metal diaphragm 24. Surge of fluid due to rapid accelerations which might uncover one of the diodes is restricted by baffles and/or by the provision of hollow resilient balls (not shown) fixedly mounted in the vapour space above the coolant. In operation the coolant near the diodes evaporates and condenses in cooler parts of the liquid or on the parts of the tube bounding the vapour space which may be finned and cooled by a forced air draught. Components . associated with the rectifiers such as resistors and capacitors may also be housed in the tube. |
