<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide steel for high frequency induction hardened gear which is suitable for a gear which requires excellent impact characteristic, bending fatigue strength and contact fatigue strength, to be used in the automobile and various kinds of industrial machines, and a method for producing the gear using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The steel for high frequency induction hardened gear excellent in impact characteristic, bending fatigue characteristic and contact fatigue characteristic, is composed of, by mass, 0.25-0.50% C,≥1.5% Si, 0.3-2.0% Mn,≤0.7% Cr, and when needed, one or more elements of 0.010-0.060% Nb, 0.005-0.05% Ti and 0.0005-0.01% B, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. In the steel, Z obtained with formula (1) satisfies 18≤Z≤38. Z=10Si+Cr+50(D×Ceq)/A... (1).
