PURPOSE: An optical disc playback device and a control method thereof are provided to prevent the deterioration of the playback performance by determining a sleep mode by the state of an optical disk or an ODD(Optical Disk Drive)device. CONSTITUTION: A main controller(150) transmits a sleep mode switching command to an ODD device. If the slip mode switching is received, an ODD device controller(10) checks the state of an optical disc or the ODD device and determines the switching to the sleep mode. The ODD device checks the amount of eccentricity of the optical disk. If the eccentricity of the optical disc is less than a reference value, the controller of the ODD device does not perform the sleep mode switching.
