[Also in Division B3] A machine tool has a reciprocating tool holder which forms part of an articulated quadrilateral in which the first side W is formed by a support, the second and fourth sides Y and X respectively are opposite and are formed by pivoting links, the third size Z is formed by the tool holder so that the working part of the tool lies generally in the projection of the third side beyond the pivot point between the third and fourth sides, and the second side Y is shorter than the fourth side X so that the working part of the tool moves in an approximately straight line when the quadrilateral is pivoted. The arm 6 is pivoted to the frame at 7 and is pivoted at 9 to a bracket 10 which is rotatably mounted on the tool holder 13 at 12. The upper end of the tool-holder is connected at 17 to one end of each of a pair of members 16 of adjustable length, which are connected at their other ends 19 to the machine frame. The joints at the ends of the members 16 allow the members to tilt and swivel so that the toolholder 13 can be rotated relative to the arm 6 so that the tool edge 24 is at an angle to the horizontal, and is fixed in the desired attitude by locking the joints. The arm 6 is raised and lowered by pitmans 5 driven by means 2, 3 and 4. The distance " X " is considerably greater than the distance " Y " and the distance between the joints 9 and 17 so that the motion of the tool edge 24 is along a straight line 25.</p> |
