PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that can remove a foreign matter adhering to the surface of a contact type charging means without using a complicated configuration. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes a photoreceptor drum 2, a charging roller 3, a developing unit 5, a transfer roller 17, and a cleaner 9. The image forming apparatus supplies a cleaning toner to the surface of the photoreceptor drum 2 from the developing unit 5 while reversely rotating the photoreceptor drum 2. Without applying a charging bias to the surface of the charging roller 3, the apparatus substantially uniformly attaches the supplied cleaning toner to the surface of the photoreceptor drum 2, and thereby the foreign matter on the surface is attached to the cleaning roller. Thereafter, while rotating the photoreceptor drum 2 in a normal direction, the apparatus applies the charging bias to the charging roller 3, and thereby the cleaning toner is moved to the surface of the photoreceptor drum 2 from the surface of the charging roller 3. The apparatus subsequently recovers the cleaning toner to the cleaner 9 from the surface of the photoreceptor drum 2, and thereby the surface of the charging roller 3 is cleaned.
