<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve blackening of display in a power-off state in a display device including a liquid crystal display panel of a normally white mode. <P>SOLUTION: Between a wave plate 13 and a backlight unit 3, a half mirror 15 is provided to specularly reflect external light entering from a viewer side through a polarizer 28 of the liquid crystal display panel 2 to be converted into linearly polarized light P1 and then converted into circularly polarized light C1 through the wave plate 13 so that a phase may be reversed without canceling a polarization state and to transmit irradiation light from the backlight unit 3.
