PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detecting device capable of accurately detecting a focus, even when the brightness of an object is low. SOLUTION: The focus detecting device includes: a light-receiving means 161d configured to receive luminous flux corresponding to a plurality of focus detecting positions set in a plurality of positions in an image plane of an optical system, and output light-receiving signals; a focus detecting means 163 configured to detect the focusing state of the optical system based on the light-receiving signals; an irradiation means 140 configured to irradiate the object with the illumination light; a first classifying means 170 configured to classify the plurality of focus detecting positions into a plurality of groups based on the light-receiving signals obtained when irradiating with the illumination light by the irradiation means 140; and a second classifying means 170 configured to classify, based on the focusing state of the focus detecting positions included in at least one group, the focus detection positions included in the group among the plurality of groups.
