PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair dye composition which can lower and soften the elasticity of each hair, can improve the deterioration of the touch due to the damage of the hair in a hair dye treatment even for thick and hard Asian hair, and does not deteriorate dyeability; and to provide a method for dyeing hair therewith. SOLUTION: This invention relates to the hair dye composition containing the following ingredients (a), (b) and (c) and having pH 2 to 12 at 25°C: (a) 0.1 to 20 mass% of an aromatic sulfone compound represented by formula (1) (wherein, R is H or a monohydric hydrocarbon group, or two adjacent Rs form a divalent hydrocarbon group; X is O or N; when X is O, Y is H; when X is N, Y is a carbonyl group bound to X; Z<SP>+</SP>is a monovalent cation), (b) 0.01 to 5 mass% of carnitine or its salt as the carnitine amount, and (c) 0.1 to 10 mass% of an oxidizer.
