Polymers of ethylenically unsaturated monomers are made by polymerizing one or more monomers in the presence of an Alfin catalyst and a molecular weight regulator consisting of a dihydro aromatic compound. By Alfin catalyst is meant a mixture of sodium, isopropoxide allyl sodium, and sodium chloride. The monomers polymerized may be 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl-1, -3-butadiene, styrene, piperylene, 3-furyl-1,3-butadiene, 3-methoxy -1,3-butadiene, p-chlorostyrene, p-methoxystyrene, alphamethylstyrene, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl ether, vinylfurane, or mixtures such as butadiene and styrene, or a stream containing butadiene, 1- and 2-butenes, and ethylene and propylene. Specified dihydrocompounds are 1,4-dihydrobenzene, 1,4-dihydronaphthalene, 1,2-dihydrobenzene, dihydrotoluene, dihydroxylene, and mixtures of these with 1,4-dihydrobenzene, and 1,4-dihydronaphthalene. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The polymer is recovered by known methods and may be vulcanized by conventional techniques. |
