PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hemming method and a device for it by which the generation of the deformation on the surface of a workpiece is suppressed simply and surely. SOLUTION: In the hemming work which is performed to the flange 18 of a wheel arch part 16, the hemming device 10 determines whether the distance L between rollers, which is calculated in a roller distance calculating part 76 is larger than a threshold vale La which is stored in a storage part 74 or not in a determining part 78. When the roller distance L is larger than the threshold value La, the hemming roller 52 is kept away from the guide roller 50 by controlling a motor on the basis of abnormal stop control data which is prepared in a control data preparation part 79 by the motor control part 80.
