PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a length measurement apparatus equipped with a simply-structured measure formed body. SOLUTION: The length measurement apparatus 10 comprises a bistable magnetic element 102, a measure formed body 200, measurement distribution elements 202 with many magnetic short-circuit elements 202 spaced apart from one another on the measure formed body 200, and a reading head 100 which is movable relative to the measure formed body 200 in its longitudinal direction and which includes a first reading head magnet 114a and a second reading head magnet 114b, the reading head magnets 114a, 114 being arranged transverse to the longitudinal direction and with opposite polarity to one another. Either of the reading head magnets 114a, 114b is arranged at a measurement distribution element 202. The reading head magnets 114a, 114b are spaced apart from one another so that the short-circuit element 202 only suppresses the magnetic field 116a of the first reading head magnet 114a in a first relative position and only suppresses the magnetic field 116b of the second reading head magnet 114b in a second relative position.
